Usually you can go with

groupadd username groupname

Important groups:

• dialout - if you want to use pppd or something like that
• cdrom - if you want to access the cdrom drive
• audio - if you want to be able to play audio
• dip - ????
• video - if you want to have direct access to your graphics card ???
• camera - if you want to access your digicam (and have hotplug and libgphoto2 installed)
